Alternatives to Red River Software: Where Jobbers, Petroleum Marketers, Wholesalers, and C-Store Owners Look When the Co-op Model Is Not Theirs
Red River Software has served co-ops and fuel dealers out of Idaho for over 40 years. This article is for the operator whose business has grown into a different shape.
If you run Red River's Fuel Suite or CSMinder you run software with a long record among farm cooperatives, small-town c-stores, and propane and fuel dealers across the country. This article is for the jobber, petroleum marketer, wholesaler, or c-store owner who came to Red River through one of those doors and now runs a business that is mostly rack-to-dealer supply, commissioned agents, company stores, and the property under them.

Where Red River is the right answer
A cooperative or a small chain that wants the register, the card processing, the pricebook, and the back office from one vendor is exactly who Red River serves. Its Vanguard POS and Pioneer card processor sit at the counter, CSMinder runs the store, and Fuel Suite handles bulk inventory and delivery, including propane, which FastDragon does not touch. One of its published customer stories describes a store cutting management staff from five to three after moving to it. If your business is a co-op with a fuel side, or a dealer network that delivers propane and fuel oil, Red River covers ground we do not and you should keep it on the list.
Why customers look around anyway
The jobbers who call us from Red River usually describe the same drift. The business started as a dealer or a co-op fuel department and grew into a wholesaler: rack purchases in three states, motor fuel tax in each, dealer billing on supply contracts, a few commissioned agents settled daily, two or three company stores on a POS the vendor did not sell, and the real estate held in its own entity. Each of those pieces got attached to the original system with a spreadsheet and a re-key. The register is still fine. The company around it is the problem.
The other reason is the POS. Red River's store side works best with Red River's own register. A wholesaler whose stores already run Gilbarco, Verifone, or NCR at the counter wants a back office that syncs to what is installed, rather than a reason to replace it.
What most jobbers, marketers, wholesalers, and c-store owners actually need
FastDragon is built for the operator described above: dedicated to the jobber, the petroleum marketer, the wholesaler, and the c-store owner, direct about the price, modular, and all in one place. You switch on what you run:
- Wholesale distribution. Rack pricing, BOL to invoice in one entry, freight and motor fuel tax pass-through, purchase-to-sales allocation, dealer billing.
- Commissioned-agent stations. Daily settlement of fuel sales, card receipts, rent, and commission.
- Company-owned c-stores. Back office, pricebook, shrink, fuel reconciliation, synced to the POS you already have.
- Accounting and books. A full ledger with multi-entity built in, or posting to the QuickBooks you already run.
- Compliance. Tank, inspection, and permit records with the dates on a calendar.
- Real estate. Leases, rent, and the property side of each site.
- Fleet and haul. Trucks, drivers, and freight billing.
- Fuel rebates, loyalty, and security. Each its own switch.
Run two of those and you pay for two. Add a third when the business does. The move itself is fast. Think six weeks, not six months, depending on the client, and a couple of months for a complex one. Our team does the data work and you keep running your old system until the cutover.
How to run the comparison
Whatever you are leaving and wherever you land, the same four questions sort the field fast. Bring your own numbers to every demo: a month of BOLs, your dealer list, your tax jurisdictions, and one of your own statements.
- Show me my load. One BOL from purchase through tax through dealer invoice, with nothing typed twice.
- Show me the price. A written monthly figure for what I run today, and the figure for adding one more piece next year.
- Show me the exit. How my data leaves if I ever go, in what format, and what it costs.
- Show me who answers. Who picks up the phone at 7 am on a Monday when the rack file is wrong, and where they sit.
Who's behind it
I've been in and around fuel and convenience since the 1990s, on the technology side. I was the tech lead on the Jack in the Box c-store and gas station rollout, working beside their CEO. I also worked at Series2K for over a decade, and still recommend their c-store back office to people it fits. The years since have gone to serving jobbers, who tend to get overlooked by vendors chasing the hundred-site accounts.
Alternatives to Red River Software for a jobber, petroleum marketer, wholesaler, or c-store owner
For the independent jobber, marketer, wholesaler, or c-store owner, FastDragon is the modular option: everything above, switched on a piece at a time and priced to what you run. The other established systems worth a call are Series2K, ADD Systems, AIMS, and iRely. If PDI bought your vendor, start with the PDI article. Our vendor comparison puts the field side by side and the buyer's guide has the demo questions to bring to each.
If you have a renewal or an upgrade date in front of you, send it to us. We'll tell you in one call whether we fit.
Questions people ask
Who is Red River Software built for?
Red River names three markets: convenience stores, fuel dealers, and cooperatives. Its Fuel Suite is sold to wholesalers, jobbers, and dealers for petroleum and propane delivery, and CSMinder, Vanguard POS, Pioneer Card Processor, and Pricebook cover the store side. The company is in Post Falls, Idaho and has been at it for over 40 years.
Does Red River do propane?
Yes. The company describes Fuel Suite as the industry standard for petroleum and propane delivery. FastDragon does not serve propane or heating oil delivery, so if propane is a large part of your business, Red River covers ground we do not.
What are the alternatives to Red River Software for a fuel jobber or wholesaler?
For a jobber, petroleum marketer, wholesaler, or c-store owner, the independent systems are FastDragon, Series2K, ADD Systems, AIMS, and iRely, all quote priced. FastDragon is the modular one: wholesale, commissioned agents, c-stores, books, compliance, real estate, fleet, and loyalty, each switched on separately and priced to what you run.
How long does a move from Red River to FastDragon take?
Think six weeks, not six months, depending on the client and how much history comes across, and a couple of months for a complex one. Our team does the data work and you keep running your current system until the cutover.
